Select Science interviews Warren Cairns from the institute for the Dynamics of Environmental Processes at Ca’Foscari University of Venice.
At this institute they work on polio climatic research which looks at contaminants in ice cores. They collect ice which goes back to 800,000 years and will continue to collect ice all the way back to 1 million years to compare what the climate was like in the past.
The second line of research in looking at the exchange of mercury in the snow pack and the air in Antarctica and looking at the exchanges, sources and sinks of mercury.
Before going to Antarctica all of the equipment has to be thoroughly cleaned. The Ultrapure water is produced using the Purelab Chorus 1 complete and the Chorus 1 analytica from ELGA WaterLab. These are kept in a class 10,000 clean room so that there are no contaminants. The Chorus 1 complete has a 60 liter tank which can generate the water and then recirculate it to clean. It is then set to not refill until it is completely empty so then it holds freshly cleaned water which will be of the highest purity.
The snow and the subsurface snow samples are collected twice daily and stored in a -20 freezer container and gets shipped from Antarctica to Italy.
For the future it is hoped that the global mercury levels decrease so that it becomes the global background concentrations.
With the help from the ELGA Purelab Chorus 1 these tests are done to the highest level with no contaminants to interfere with the research.
